A Sad Two Days

We had a couple of sad days this week. About a week ago our fish, Fred, started to look a little sick. He started to get fin and tail rot. I know that sounds bad, but it can usually be cleared up with antibiotics. We started Fred on some antibiotics and made sure the water had the right PH, but he continued to get sicker and sicker. The last few days of the week he lost his ability to achieve equilibrium and on Friday he finally just couldn't hold on anymore. Now I think that we would be dog people if we didn't rent, but we have definitely become fish people. I could watch Fred swim around for hours. He was quite the funny character. Cory has had him for about six years, so he was a pretty big fish. We were pretty sad when he died. This was the fish that we drove to get a new filter for over a year ago at 3am because he was overfed by some kids and couldn't breathe. But at least we still have Wilma, his woman friend, we thought.

She started to mope around the bottom of the tank underneath Fred and she would swim around him in circles trying to get him to play when he was sick. Then on Saturday we came home and found her dead in the fish tank. It sounds crazy, but I think she might have died from a broken heart. She looked so sad yesterday. She just kept swimming around and starring back at us. So now all we have left is our little algae eater. Our tank looks so empty. I tried to find some pictures to post, but we don't have any and all the ones online are copy righted, but if you are interested they were cichlids. Fred was gold and Wilma was white and black stripped. We'll miss them.

oh how sad...your fish died, now an eye infection. What a week you have been having. That is so sad. At least your fish knew you loved them. 3am to find a filter? That is devotion.

From me to him

Dear Isaak, Happy Birthday my little guy! It feels like just yesterday that you were literally pulled out to come into this world. Yes literally with forceps around your little head because you accidentally faced the wrong direction or maybe you faced the direction you wanted to. You didn’t seem like you were quite ready to come out because you were just wailing--almost like you were saying, “You know--I was perfectly comfortable in there.” I’ve learned this year that you surely know what you want and you will not stop until you get it. For example when we tried to spend the weekend away from home and you didn't like sleeping in your playpen! You woke up every 1/2 hour to let us know you weren't comfortable. You finally fell asleep around 3am when we put you on the bouncer. Cory slept with his arm around you on the floor so you didn't roll off. You weren’t going to come easy, eh?? I remember pushing and pushing and pushing and thinking this isn’t going how I thought that i...

July 29 Ward Lake & the Library Ketchikan

It's raining it's pouring the old man is snoring. He's really snoring. It's been down pouring since we got here last night and it poured all day long. We got up and headed out to Ward Lake to a BBQ with their church.  It's beautiful. The kids thought it was the best ever because they had donuts, chips, hot dogs, watermelon, cherries and cookies. Isaak of course immediately started playing with some kids his age. Chloe and Lydia frolicked around in the woods and played horseshoes. It stopped raining for maybe 10 minutes, but other than that it picked right back up. I was sure they were going to cancel the BBQ, but again the kids seemed indifferent to all the rain. Some of them were even kayaking. I was too busy freezing! The hike around the lake is 1.5 miles and we saw a beaver den sans beaver. We walked around the Lake and it was like being submerged in the rain forest. Well it's not like being submerged in a rain forest. We were in a rain forest called the Tong...

For the LOVE!!

What a day we had. What a day we had. I get tired again just thinking about it. Cory's car is getting the muffler put back on. I'm a little sad about it because Isaak and I could hear his car coming from over a block away when he was on his way home, but it's also a little embarrassing how loud it is. I'm sure it defied all noise ordinances. In any case, Isaak and I have been getting up a little early to take Cory to work, which is kind of fun because we get to see him more, but before dinner it's not kind of fun. It's kind of stinky because it's a hustle to get everything all put together. Yesterday I had to make dinner at about 3pm so I could get everything in. So back to yesterday. Isaak and I had just rolled our bushy little tails out of bed and both of us were still in pajamas. I was wearing my chacos and one of Cory's jackets and Isaak wanted to bring all of his blankets. Thankfully for some weird reason I threw his tennis shoes into the diaper bag...
