The Dirty Dozen

People are often asking me what food they should eat organic and which ones don't matter. I learned about the dirty dozen last summer from Gina. So I've done some research on the foods and have found out which chemicals are found on the foods and why you should buy them organic. I was kind of shocked to find out more about it. I have read a few books and tons of articles, but this is what I found. I've been buying all these items organic. Also on a side note I've been using oils and they recently did a study about the toxins in our body and they were testing fruit and they sliced open a grape and a small itty bitty little grape contained over 9 toxins including pesticides and insecticides. Kind of gross. So alas the list....

1. Apples-Diphenylamine, thiabendazole, and azinphos methyl--instead try kiwis, oranges, watermelon and tangerines, bananas
2. Imported Grapes-Captan, Iprodione, and Dimethoate--instead make sure they are US grown
3. Peaches-Iprodione, Phosmet, and Propargite--instead bananas and oranges
4. Pears-Thiabendazole, Azinphos Methyl, and Diphenylamine--instead oranges
5. Potatoes(I know surprising, but they are dosed at least two times with pesticides, etc)- Chlorpropham, Thiabendazole and Endosulfan--instead Sweet Potatoes and Corn
6. Peppers(only bell green and red)-Methamidophos, Acephate, and Endosulfan instead Green peas, brocolli, romaine, lettuce, carrots, brussel sprouts, asparagus.
7. Strawberries-Captan, Iprodione, and Methomyl-instead Kiwis, oranges, cantaloupe
8. Spinach-Permethrin Total(really bad toxin and is known to be an endocrine toxicant, neourotoxicant and reproductive toxicant) and Dimethoate--instead broccoli, brussel sprouts, asparagus, romaine lettuce
9. CherriesUS-Azinphos Methyl, Myclobutanil, and carbaryl instead grapefruit, cantaloupe and watermelon-so support those canadians and buy their cherries!
10. Celery-Dicloran, Acephate and Oxamyl instead carrots, broccoli, radishes and romaine
11. Red Raspberries-Captan, Iprodione and Vinclozolin instead plums, oranges and tangerines
12. Nectarines-Iprodione, Azinphos Methyl, and Propargite instead bananas and oranges

Blueberries also have been found on other peoples dirty dozen list, but maybe they are going with the bakers dozen instead of a normal dozen. That is so weird-why do bakers have a different dozen? How can a dozen be anything but a dozen? I only listed the most common toxins and they are also known to contain other toxins rather than just the three that are listed. If you want to now more about toxins you can look at www.panna.org or www.pesticideinfo.org

But I have great news too. I also have a list of over 15 foods that are the least contaminated so no need to buy organic unless you want too or you eat a ton of it drumroll please..... Asparagus, Avocados, bananas, broccoli, cauliflower, Sweet Corn, kiwis, mangoes, onions, papayas, Sweet peas, pineapple, sweet potatoes, plums and watermelons. Now isn't that exciting. Alas. The list is complete. Sorry if you're bored out of your mind or don't care! The insteads are foods that contain similar nutrient qualities that don't have as many contaminants in them. And one last side note-the contaminants found in strawberries are supposedly the worst for little babies in utero, so if you buy them maybe just try to avoid them while pregnant. And of course with all produce make sure to wash them and they can easily be washed with a little soup and water to clean them up. You should always wash organic produce-it doesn't come clean!

OW!!!!!

So yesterday we decided to go rollerblading. I know it’s a little out of style, but it is great fun. The first thing that I need to mention is that I have a great pair of rollerblades. They are speedy-I barely have to move. The second is that I’m not great at stopping. I can do it, but it’s hard to stop quickly. So the story-There is this trail by our house that is hilly and curvy. We start going uphill and we are going against the wind so it’s pretty hard. We were a huffin’ and puffin’ and sweatin‘--Cory more than me since he‘s actually pushing the stroller. I start to get a little nervous when Cory points out that we will be going downhill and the wind will push us. Hmmmm-I’m thinking to myself that means we’ll practically be flying. I tell myself it’s okay because I’ve gotten much better at stopping. I even reached the top of the trail before Cory and was telling my friend Tina that I had better get off the phone unless I wanted to end up getting plastic surgery from face planting.

The Monkey Mobile

I've been thinking about getting one of those bike mobiles that you can attach to the back of your bike to haul Isaak around on. We were visiting Cory's sister Heather and she has one so we thought we'd try it out... At the beginning, he was thinking that it was pretty cool. He was smiling and talking away... Then he realized he was trapped!!!! He fought, pushed, and shoved trying to escape. He became distraught. Crying and whining trying to tell us that he needed help to get out! Isaak falling as he tries to free himself...no worries...he was safe. I was right there taking pics His face of joy as we unzipped the top to free him from his netty prison. We decided not to get one for obvious reasons...... This picture has nothing to do with the Monkey mobile, but I love his eyes!!! so pretty--we love to go on walks so we bundle him all up in the stroller so he stays nice and toasty.
